Local Government Law

The Local Government (UP) Act, 2009 enshrined into law six key reforms that serve as the basis of successful localization of the SDGs:

  • Bottom-up planning via Ward Shava
  • Citizen participation in Standing Committees
  • Creation of Union 5-year plans
  • Annual Reporting on Plan Progress
  • Open Budget Meetings
  • Citizen Charter

In addition, the Right to Information law and the recent National Integrity Strategy provide mechanisms by which citizens can ensure local governments and ministry personnel are properly fulfilling their duties.
